Composition

1 ml of sterile solution (eye drops) contains 2.5 mg of levomycetin (chloramphenicol).

Pharmacological effect

Pharmacodynamics

Levomycetin is antibiotic of vast gamma of action, it is effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, Rickettsia, spirochaeta and some other large viruses. The drug is active towards strains resistant to penicillin, streptomycine, sulphanilamides. It is poorly effective towards acid-resistant bacteria, blue pus bacillus, Clostridium and protozoa. Incommondosesitactsbacteriostatically. The mechanism of antibacterial action is related to breakage of protein bacterium synthesis. The drug resistance is developed slowly and usually without cross resistance to other chemio-therapeutic agents.

Pharmacokinetics

Therapeutic concentration of levomycetin under local intake is revealed in cornea, iris, vitreous body, (no in lens).

Indications for usage

The drug is administered for prevention and treatment of infection eye diseases (conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis).

Administrationanddosage

The drug is administered as instillation to conjunctival sac 1—2 drops 3—4 times a day.

Adverse reaction

Possible allergic reactions.

Contraindications

The drug is contraindicated in depressed hematosis, individual intolerance, skin diseases (psoriasis, eczema, fungi diseases), pregnancy and in infants.

Interaction with other drugs

To prevent inhibition progression on haemopoiesis it is not recommended to administer concurrently sulphanilamides.
